ioio is a generative music project based on the “no-input mixing board” technique, which consists of producing sound from a mixing console without any external audio sources. The resulting internal feedback loops generate non-linear, syncopated rhythms and textures characteristic of this sonic contingency. This is not how an audio mixer is typically intended to be used; rather, the process goes against the device’s original design and purpose. It requires hacking the device and subverting its intended operation. The most common form of “no-input mixing board” practice is analog, although some digital software — but not all — also allows it. In fact, digital environments usually include safety controls that must be bypassed for this autonomous sound-generation process to occur.

This music has been described as “music from machines to machines”. Play it loud!
